Macron: US "peace plan" for Ukraine needs revision

French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Saturday that the "peace plan" presented by the United States to end the war between Ukraine and Russia is a good starting point, but it requires revision with European involvement.

Details: Macron told journalists at a G20 meeting in South Africa that "there is a peace plan that has emerged, which incorporates ideas that are quite familiar, whether they were shared or not. It's good in that it proposes peace and recognises important elements on issues of sovereignty, security guarantees".
"But it's a basis for work that needs to be revisited, as we did last summer, because this plan, first of all, wasn't negotiated with the Europeans," he added.
"Yet, it stipulates many things for the Europeans. Frozen assets are held by Europeans. The European integration of Ukraine is in the hands of the Europeans. Knowing what NATO is doing is in the hands of NATO members. So there are many things that can't simply be an American proposal, that require broader consultation," Macron said.
Background:
- Leaders of European states and EU institutions, as well as G7 countries (excluding the US), have expressed disagreement with parts of the US-proposed "peace plan" for Ukraine, but agreed to take the draft as a basis and expressed readiness to work on it jointly.
- According to Bild, Europeans want at least four points in the proposed draft to be amended.
