Details: Lavrov said that Moscow has so far received no explanations through diplomatic channels from the United States about what Trump meant when he mentioned the resumption of nuclear testing.
Quote: "It is unclear whether he was referring to tests of nuclear weapon carriers, so-called subcritical tests, or whether Donald Trump actually meant that Washington intends to resume full-scale nuclear testing...
The comments by representatives of Washington that have appeared in the public square seem to indicate that there is no unified understanding of what the US president meant."
Background:
- Trump instructed the Pentagon to immediately resume nuclear weapons testing after Russian leader Vladimir Putin announced that the nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile had been tested.
- The Trump administration later clarified that the nuclear weapons tests would not involve actual nuclear explosions.
- Putin, in turn, has ordered preparations to be made for potential nuclear tests once it becomes clear what steps the United States intends to take in this regard.
