Orbán demands that EU support Trump's plan and halt aid to Ukraine

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is urging the EU to accept the US "peace plan" consisting of 28 points, describing it as an opportunity to suspend the EU's multi-billion-euro financial support for Ukraine.

Details: In the letter, Orbán called on the EU to agree to the terms of the US proposal, which requires Ukraine to give up part of its territory and reduce the size of its armed forces.
"Europeans must immediately and unconditionally support the peace initiative of the United States. In addition to supporting the US president, we must without delay launch autonomous and direct negotiations with Russia," Orbán wrote.
He also stated that Hungary "does not support the European Union sending any further financial assistance to Ukraine in any form" and "does not consent to such a decision being taken in the name and framework of the EU".
An EU official , speaking anonymously, responded that, apart from Hungary, the other 26 EU member states "have repeatedly made their support for Ukraine clear and that it is unequivocal".
"There is intense engagement and coordination among European leaders, also with non-EU partners, to continue that support in light of recent developments," the official added.
Background:
- EU officials in Brussels are currently negotiating with member states on how to use immobilised Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a €140-billion reparations loan.
- Budapest has consistently attempted to block essential military and financial aid for Ukraine's defence, while simultaneously strengthening Hungary's ties with the Kremlin and opposing sanctions aimed at weakening Russia's war machine.
- Leaders of European states and EU institutions, as well as the prime ministers of the UK, Canada, Japan and Norway, have said that the US "peace plan" project requires further work. They expressed readiness to contribute, while immediately voicing concern about the proposal's demand to reduce the Ukrainian forces.
