Lithuania and Russia in talks on gas transit to Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast

Lithuanian and Russian energy companies are in talks on extending the agreement on gas transit to Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast.

Details: The current 10-year deal, under which gas reaches Kaliningrad only via Lithuanian territory, is due to expire in December 2025.
Gas transits through Lithuania from Belarus and is then supplied to Kaliningrad. Lithuania receives on average about €12 million a year in transit fees.
As part of the talks between Lithuania's gas transmission system operator Amber Grid and Russian energy giant Gazprom, the parties may agree to a shorter extension and a higher transit tariff. The European Commission was informed about the discussions.
Background:
- Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said earlier this year that he supported prolonging the transit arrangement so as "not to provoke Russia".
- Lithuania was one of the first European Union members to stop buying Russian gas entirely after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
