The European Commission has been developing a plan to completely phase out Russian fossil fuels from the EU market.
However, despite all efforts, Russian gas supplies to Europe persist and Brussels is determined to put an end to them.
Source European Commission Spokesperson AnnaKaisa Itkonen, as reported by enkorr, a Ukrainian energy news outlet, with reference to Interfax Details Regarding the plan or roadmap for the European Unions complete abandonment of Russian fossil fuels, its underway.
It was announced as something the Energy Commission would present within the first 100 days of its mandate, so we still have a few days before that deadline, Itkonen said at a press briefing in Brussels on 20 January.
The EU has taken significant steps to eliminate any Russian fossil fuels and overall, we have significantly reduced imports of Russian gas, she added.
We have cut all Russian coal imports, most Russian oil imports and more than twothirds of Russian gas, Itkonen noted.
Russian gas is still present in the EU market despite these significant achievements.
We would prefer this not to be the case, and it is, of course, one of the issues that will be addressed in the roadmap, which will be presented in the coming weeks, she added.
Background Since the beginning of 2025, Europe has been purchasing Russian gas in unprecedented volumes, spending billions of dollars that the Kremlin uses to fund its war in Ukraine, just weeks after the end of a major transit agreement that had raised hopes that the EU could end its dependency on Moscow.
