Zelenskyy spoke with Macron before meeting US negotiators

It has emerged that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron ahead of talks with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Details: Macron was the first to report the conversation. He stressed that the Americans, Europeans and Ukrainians are striving only for peace.
"France is, and will remain, at Ukraine's side to build a robust and lasting peace – one that can guarantee Ukraine's security and sovereignty, and that of Europe, over the long term. I thank all the Ukrainian, European and American negotiators mobilised toward this goal," he wrote.
In turn, Zelenskyy thanked Macron for his support. He wrote: "I was glad to speak with you today ahead of my meeting with President Trump's envoys. We are coordinating closely and working together for the sake of our shared security".
Background:
- It was reported earlier that the US may provide Ukraine with security guarantees similar to those envisaged by Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which would be approved by Congress and be legally binding.
- Talks between Ukraine and the United States on a peaceful settlement of the war with Russia are taking place in Berlin on Sunday 14 December.
