Details: US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff were spotted in central Berlin by a photographer from the German news agency dpa.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukrainian, US and European officials will hold a series of meetings in Berlin in the coming days.
"Most importantly, I will be meeting with envoys of President Trump, and there will also be meetings with our European partners, with many leaders, concerning the foundation of peace – a political agreement to end the war," Zelenskyy said in his evening address on Saturday.
Washington has for months sought to balance the demands of each side, as Trump is pushing for a rapid end to Russia's war and has grown increasingly frustrated by delays.
Efforts to find possible compromises have faced serious obstacles, including control over Donbas, which is largely occupied by Russian forces, and security guarantees for Ukraine.
Background:
- Axios reported that the United States may offer Ukraine security guarantees similar to those envisaged under Article 5 of the NATO Treaty which would be approved by Congress and be legally binding.
- The Wall Street Journal reported that Witkoff will meet with European leaders and Zelenskyy in Berlin.
- The invitation for US representatives to attend the Berlin meeting followed a tense phone call on Wednesday between Friedrich Merz, Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer and Donald Trump, during which the sides sought to overcome differences over the direction of peace efforts.
