US congressman says forcing Ukraine to cede territory "not a Reagan move, but a Chamberlain one"

US Republican Congressman Don Bacon has said that forcing Ukraine to give up its territories for the sake of a peace agreement resembles the situation of the "Munich conspiracy" of 1938.

Details: Bacon drew a historical analogy with the policy of appeasing Adolf Hitler supported by then UK prime minister Neville Chamberlain, which ultimately failed to prevent the outbreak of the Second World War.
Quote: "Forcing Ukraine to give more of its territory to make peace with Russia is not a Reagan move, but it is a Chamberlain one. Chamberlain did the same to Czechoslovakia with Hitler. His reputation will always be sullied because of it."
Details: The congressman pointed out that 70% of Americans support Ukraine.
"We must stand with freedom and against the bully," he added.
Background:
- At the end of November, Czech President Petr Pavel said that Ukraine must be fully included in any negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the war launched by Russia, warning that excluding the country would evoke parallels with the Munich Agreement of 1938.
- Earlier, independent Senator from Maine Angus King compared the proposed peace plan of the US administration to the Munich Agreement concluded in 1938 by then UK prime minister Neville Chamberlain with Adolf Hitler, which became a historic failure of the policy of appeasement.
