The administration of US President Donald Trump is said to have discussed the idea of forming a new body of major powers, Core 5, which would include China and Russia, bringing traditional adversaries closer together and sharply contrasting with the existing G7.

Details: The idea reportedly appeared in a longer, unpublished version of the National Security Strategy, parts of which the White House released last week.

According to Defense One, the strategy envisaged creating a new group of leading global powers – C5 (Core 5): the United States, China, Russia, India and Japan.

This was intended to be an informal club similar to the G7 (the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Japan).

However, membership in such a grouping was to be determined not by political system (G7 is a club of wealthy democracies) but solely by population size (over 100 million people) and economic potential.

Like the G7, Core 5 would hold regular meetings to discuss global issues.

The topic of the first C5 summit was expected to be the normalisation of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia as the key step towards stabilising the Middle East.

However, officials from Trump's team deny the existence of alternative versions of the document.

Background:

• The idea of Russia returning to the G7 – effectively restoring it to the G8 – appeared in the initial version of the Trump team's "peace plan".
• German Chancellor Friedrich Merz rejected the possibility of Russia rejoining the G7.
• French President Emmanuel Macron expressed a similar view, noting that there are no grounds for Russia to be readmitted.
• For his part, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin claimed that he is not interested in Russia returning to the G7.
