CNN reported the information.Officials describe a complex situation where Russian forces continue making incremental territorial gains at tremendous cost in casualties, but without achieving decisive strategic breakthroughs that would fundamentally alter the war's trajectory."Russians are creeping in but it is not a fundamental change from what has been happening over the last several months," a Ukrainian military official said. The numbers support this assessment. "The truth is that in this last year, Russia has gained less than 1% of Ukrainian territory. So that, of course, is not the winning of the war," Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braze said Monday. "That's not the objectives Putin and Kremlin is looking for. He wants to deny Ukraine its sovereignty. He wants to subjugate Ukraine as a country. So they are not getting that on the battlefield."Still, officials acknowledge serious challenges facing Kyiv. "Ukraine is incrementally losing strategic ground in the east through attrition and limited defensive positions," a senior U.S. official said.Recent Russian advances near Pokrovsk, once a crucial supply hub for Ukrainian forces in the east, have intensified concerns. While Russian commanders have repeatedly claimed control of the city, Ukrainian forces insist fighting continues. Though the area sits near important Ukrainian supply routes, those lines remain operational despite the proximity of combat. The disconnect between Trump's public statements and military assessments has raised concerns among European officials that the president may be losing patience with stalled peace negotiations and could potentially withdraw from talks while blaming Ukraine and Europe for obstructing an agreement. "It's becoming more of a political liability for him as an endless war," the senior U.S. official said.In an interview with Politico recorded Monday, Trump again criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, urging him to accept a peace deal with Moscow. "He's going to have to get on the ball and start accepting things, you know, when you're losing," Trump said. When asked directly if Ukraine had lost the war, Trump responded: "they lost a lot of land" and "you certainly wouldn't say it's a victory."Trump's pessimistic assessment represents a dramatic shift from just two months ago. Following a September meeting with Zelenskyy at the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump surprised observers by expressing confidence in Ukraine's prospects. "After getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia Military and Economic situation and, after seeing the Economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form," Trump wrote on social media, adding, "And, who knows, maybe even go further than that!"
