Russian ruler Vladimir Putin plans to meet with US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow in the first half of next week.
Source: Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, as reported by Kremlin-aligned Russian news agency RIA Novosti
Quote from Peskov: "Putin will receive Witkoff in the first half of next week. We will announce the date in due course."
Details: Earlier, Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov stated that a tentative agreement had been reached on Witkoff's visit to Moscow. He said that in addition to the special envoy, other representatives of the US administration will also travel to Russia.
Background:
- Bloomberg published a transcript of a phone call in which Witkoff gave Ushakov advice on how Russia should present its "peace deal" proposals to Trump.
- In another conversation between Ushakov and Putin's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev, it emerged that the 28-point "peace plan" had been drafted by Putin's aides and Witkoff was to present it as his own work.
- On 25 November, Trump said he had instructed Witkoff and US Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll to finalise the terms of the draft "peace agreement" with Russia and Ukraine, and that Witkoff would travel to Moscow to do so. If the final stage is reached, Trump will meet with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
- The US president also said that the greatest concession from Russia would be agreeing to stop fighting and not seize new territories.
- The US and Ukraine have differing views on three points of the "peace agreement", including Ukraine withdrawing without a fight from the non-occupied part of Donetsk Oblast.
