Von der Leyen outlines three essential principles for any Ukraine peace plan

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday 23 November that Ukraine's European allies have agreed on the key principles that must underpin any peace plan for ending the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Details: Von der Leyen said any credible and lasting peace plan for Ukraine "should first and foremost stop the killing and end the war, while not sowing the seeds for a future conflict".
She added that the first core principle must be that borders cannot be changed by force.
"Second, as a sovereign nation there cannot be limitations on Ukraine's armed forces that would leave the country vulnerable to future attack and thereby also undermining European security," the Commission president said.
The third principle she highlighted is that "the centrality of the European Union in securing peace for Ukraine must be fully reflected".
"Ukraine must have the freedom and sovereign right to choose its own destiny. They have chosen a European destiny. It starts with the country's reconstruction, its integration into our Single Market and our defence industrial base and ultimately, joining our Union," she said.
Von der Leyen separately stressed the need to bring back "each and every Ukrainian child abducted by Russia".
"Of all the horrors unleashed by Russia's war, none cuts deeper than this. Tens of thousands of boys and girls remain trapped in Russia. Frightened and longing for their loved ones. We must place these children at the top of the global agenda," she added.
Background: On 22 November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that representatives of leading European states will meet US officials in Geneva on Sunday amid disagreement over parts of the Trump team's "peace plan" for ending Russia's war against Ukraine.
