Details: The leaders welcomed US efforts aimed at securing peace in Ukraine.
They said the initial 28-point draft contains important elements that will be necessary to achieve a just and lasting peace.
Quote: "We believe therefore that the draft is a basis which will require additional work. We are ready to engage in order to ensure that a future peace is sustainable."
More details: The leaders reiterated the principle that borders must not be changed by force. They also voiced concern over proposed limits on Ukraine's armed forces, warning that such restrictions would leave the country vulnerable to future attacks.
Quote: "We reiterate that the implementation of elements relating to the European Union and relating to NATO would need the consent of EU and NATO members respectively.
We take this opportunity to underline the strength of our continued support to Ukraine. We will continue to coordinate closely with Ukraine and the US over the coming days."
The statement was endorsed by the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, and by the leaders of Canada, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, Germany and Norway.
