EU angered by US "peace plan" provisions on using Russian assets – Politico

European officials are privately expressing anger that the US "peace plan" proposals on the use of Russian assets for Ukraine risk undermining the EU's own negotiations on the issue.
Source: Politico, citing EU diplomatic sources, as reported by European Pravda
Details: The sources say talks in Brussels on using Russian assets are currently at an "extremely delicate stage" as legal texts are being finalised to allow frozen funds to be used to provide a loan to Ukraine.
The new US "peace plan" contains a rival idea – using the same assets to rebuild Ukraine under US management, with the United States receiving "50%" of the profits from this activity.
EU diplomats and officials interviewed by Politico fear that the proposal put forward by US President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff could destroy chances of agreeing on an EU-wide proposal regarding Russian assets.
One senior EU official reacted dismissively to the US proposal, saying that Trump has no authority to unfreeze assets held in Europe.
Another high-ranking EU politician told Politico: "Witkoff needs to see a psychiatrist."
Background:
- Ukraine will need at least €135.7 billion in Western support for 2026-27, of which €83.4 billion is for defence needs.
- The European Commission has proposed three options for providing Ukraine with financial support over the next two years.
- The EU's plan for a reparations loan for Ukraine has stalled due to objections from Belgium, where the bulk of Russian assets in the EU are held, and which fears legal consequences from such a decision.
