Donald Trump has nominated John Coale as US special envoy to Belarus, calling him one of America's most distinguished lawyers.

Details: On 9 November Trump said that Coale, who is "known as one of the truly great lawyers" in the United States, was nominated to serve as special envoy to Belarus.
Quote: "He has already successfully negotiated the release of 100 hostages and is going for an additional 50."
More details: Trump has also thanked in advance "the highly respected president of Belarus" Alexander Lukashenko for considering the additional release of some other detainees.
Background:
- In recent weeks, the Trump administration has sought to re-establish contact with the regime of the self-proclaimed Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko, reflected in the release of Belarusian political prisoners.
- As part of these efforts, the United States lifted sanctions on Belarusian state-owned airline Belavia.
- On 4 November, the US Treasury also eased some measures against Belarus by removing restrictions on the national carrier and permitting transactions linked to Lukashenko's aircraft.
