Details: Zelenskyy was asked whether he believes that the European Union is doing enough to stop Russia's war against Ukraine amid intensified Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory.
The Ukrainian president said that Europe helps Ukraine with gas imports, supplies equipment and supports the restoration of electricity and energy supplies.
Quote: "All this is very important, especially during the war. But if we are talking about whether the EU is doing enough to make Putin stop, I think today we still need both the US and Europe, and then we will have a chance to stop Putin."
More details: Zelenskyy noted the importance of European support for financing Ukrainian defence production and for strengthening Ukraine's air defence.
Speaking about the US, Zelenskyy said that Washington should be open to providing Ukraine with long-range weapons.
Quote: "This is very important. Even as a deterrent we must have them to use. We need US support."
More details: Zelenskyy said that Ukraine needs the support of US President Donald Trump on this issue, adding that he believes that it "will be a decisive pressure on Russia".
He also thanked the EU and the US for the recent sanctions that have hit Russia.
Quote: "These are tools that will force and push Russia towards a negotiation process, towards diplomacy. And undoubtedly both America and Europe will be needed in this diplomacy."
Background:
- At the end of October, the United States for the first time in Trump's second term imposed new large-scale sanctions on Russia over Moscow's refusal to engage seriously with the US president's peace efforts. Rosneft and Lukoil, Russia's largest oil companies, were among those targeted.
- The European Union finally approved its 19th package of sanctions against Russia by written procedure on the morning of 23 October.
- The energy section of the sanctions package provides for a ban on the import of Russian LNG.
