This opinion was voiced on Espreso TV by diplomat Volodymyr Khandohiy, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine, former acting foreign minister, and president of the Ukrainian Foreign Policy Association.“It’s hard to predict how things will unfold, but I believe Trump will take the lead in the talks with Xi Jinping. I don’t think Xi will make proactive demands or proposals — it’s a Chinese tradition to listen first and then act in their own way. The main topic will undoubtedly be the economy — tariffs and interest rates Trump threatens to impose on China. There’s talk of a possible delay in those tariffs, which could serve as the main ‘carrot’ for Beijing if Trump agrees to postpone or reduce them. The question is — what will he want in return? Trump has repeatedly emphasized China’s potential role in halting hostilities,” the diplomat commented.According to Khandohiy, Trump will seek political, not military, involvement from China in order to compel Russia to recognize the U.S. president’s ceasefire plan along the current line of contact. In exchange, Beijing may expect concessions on tariffs.“The Taiwan issue will also be central. For China, questions like rare earth metals or its position on the war in Ukraine are secondary compared to the top priority — Taiwan’s political future. The degree to which the U.S. is willing to make compromises on Taiwan will determine how cooperative or resistant China will be on matters concerning Ukraine. The overall goal remains the same: to draw China into the political process of enforcing a ceasefire along the front line, and later to ensure that China doesn’t undermine the sanctions measures Trump is using against Russia,” Khandohiy explained.Earlier it was reported that U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping on October 30 in South Korea for bilateral talks.
