Details: According to Zelenskyy, on Monday, Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal reported on preparations for the new Ramstein meeting, which will take place on Wednesday at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
"Our priorities are air defence – and we now have not only a list of the necessary systems and missiles – but also a clear understanding of which country can ensure prompt delivery and under what conditions," he added.
Zelenskyy also spoke about the work within the PURL programme – the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine at the expense of European NATO allies – and SAFE – the EU's defence credit mechanism.
"While PURL has already proven effective, the European instrument Security Action For Europe still needs to be filled with truly relevant content. In particular, we need such elements of national participation by European countries in SAFE that will deter Russia already now," Zelensky wrote.
Background:
- The Ramstein format was launched in March 2022 by the United States as a platform for coordinating military aid to Ukraine, with the participation of more than 50 countries.
- After Donald Trump came to power in the United States, the UK and Germany took over the coordination of Ramstein meetings.
- The previous Ramstein meeting took place on 9 September in London.
- At that meeting, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that his country was in the process of supplying two full Patriot systems to Ukraine.
- UK Defence Minister John Healey announced London's plans to finance the production of long-range drones for Ukraine in the United Kingdom.
