US President Donald Trump has called for the reinstatement of the investigation into the impeachment proceedings initiated against him in autumn 2019.

Details: Trump called the process "a far bigger illegal hoax than Watergate" and said he hopes that "the necessary authorities, including Congress, are looking into this".

He also accused Congressman Adam Schiff, who was vice chairman of the House Intelligence Committee in 2019, of dishonesty and corruption.

Background:

• In October-December 2019, Democrats in the House of Representatives launched impeachment proceedings after Trump held a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. They alleged that Trump had pressured Zelenskyy to provide damaging information about Joe Biden's family.
• Trump rejected these accusations. The proceedings ended with the Senate not removing the president from office.
