Ukraine's Energy Ministry supports construction of small nuclear plants, contemplates US cooperation

Ukraine's Ministry of Energy has said it supports the idea of introducing small modular reactors (SMRs) in Ukraine. An interdepartmental working group has been set up to develop an action plan for their implementation.

Details: Nekrasov noted that small modular reactors are a promising yet still relatively new technology worldwide. They are currently at the stage of research and demonstration projects, and only a few countries have taken practical steps to build them.
He said that, in cooperation with American partners, Ukraine is exploring the possibility of deploying SMRs at its thermal power plants and large energy-intensive facilities.
These are the Phoenix project, aimed at transitioning the Ukrainian energy sector from coal-fired power plants to small modular reactors, and the Hephaestus project, which will contribute to the modernisation of Ukraine's steel industry through the use of innovative solutions and safe SMR technology.
Background: The Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament) has drafted a bill that will allow private companies to build small modular reactors (SMRs). It was presented on 9 October to the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Housing and Utilities.
