Details: The EU reminded that the Kremlin leader is currently in Tajikistan despite the arrest warrant issued for him by the International Criminal Court.
"Tajikistan is a State Party to the Rome Statute of the ICC and failed to comply with its obligations under the Statute to execute the arrest warrant," the statement added.
The European Union expressed its "strongest support" for efforts to ensure accountability for all crimes under international law.
"In this regard, the EU continues to support the investigations by the Prosecutor of the ICC in Ukraine and calls for cooperation by all States. The EU reiterates its unwavering support to the ICC and for Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders," the statement concluded.
Background:
- Tajikistan, a member of the International Criminal Court since 2002, is currently hosting Putin at the Russia-Central Asia summit and a meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
- Tajikistan has become the second ICC member state to refuse to execute the arrest warrant for Putin: in 2024, he was received with a red carpet in Mongolia.
- Meanwhile, the Kremlin leader did not attend the BRICS summit in Brazil – also an ICC member – in July.
