Details: Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the momentum for settling the war against Ukraine, which appeared after the meeting between Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska, had been exhausted.
"Sadly, it must be stated that the strong momentum of Anchorage in favour of agreements has, through the efforts of opponents and supporters of the 'war to the last Ukrainian', primarily among Europeans, been largely exhausted," Ryabkov said.
However, the next day Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov said that US-Russia cooperation based on the Alaska summit agreements is ongoing.
"Any statements that the Anchorage momentum is fading or has been exhausted are completely false," Ushakov said.
He added that contacts between Russian and American representatives are allegedly ongoing "based on the agreements and understandings formulated immediately before and during the Alaska meeting".
Background:
- After the Putin-Trump meeting in Alaska on 15 August, the US president began increasingly criticising Russia publicly for its unwillingness to seek a settlement of the war in Ukraine.
- Following his meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump even said he believed in Ukraine's ability to reclaim the territories occupied by Russia.
- Recently, the US president also expressed confidence that he would eventually be able to settle the war that Russia has unleashed against Ukraine.
