Aviation Week reported, citing U.S. Air Force documents. The Extended-Range Attack Munition (ERAM) is a low-cost, air-launched cruise missile designed for use against high-value targets deep behind enemy lines. The missile can be deployed from both Ukraine's F-16 and MiG-29 fighters, a capability confirmed in a recent notification from the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) to Congress.According to the documents, Ukraine will receive an initial batch of 10 prototype ERAMs as early as October this year. However, the first major delivery—840 missiles produced by Virginia-based CoAspire and California-based Zone 5 Technologies—is scheduled only for the end of October 2026.Read also Why U.S. ERAM missile deliveries are crucial to UkraineThe U.S. has formally cleared the sale of up to 3,550 ERAMs to Ukraine, with lawmakers given 30 days to review the proposed export. The notification confirmed the missiles’ compatibility with Ukrainian jets, a key step in enabling Kyiv to strike deeper into Russian-held territory. The ERAM program itself is notable for its speed. Conceived only in August 2024, the missile was developed and tested in just over a year by the U.S. Air Force’s Weapons Capacity Task Force, a unit created to accelerate arms development and procurement. Backed by a $225 million budget, the task force awarded contracts to two nontraditional defense companies, demonstrated the missiles on a U.S. Douglas A-4 and a Ukrainian MiG, and prepared the prototypes for delivery. For Ukraine, the ERAM opens a new supply of long-range strike capabilities that may become central to both Ukrainian and U.S. arsenals. Yet, the long wait for mass production means Kyiv will have to make do with limited numbers for the foreseeable future.
