Military expert and Defense Express editor-in-chief Oleh Katkov said this on Espreso TV.“War is war, so there can be no avoiding losses. Russia claims that a naval kamikaze drone was used to hit the Ukrainian Navy ship Simferopol. Conceptually, this drone is identical to the MAGURA, which has already destroyed a significant number of Russian vessels. Ukrainian specialists monitoring the development of Russia’s unmanned systems had warned that the enemy was announcing the creation of such naval drones and showcasing their testing,” Katkov explained. In his view, it was obvious that the enemy would attempt to replicate Ukrainian designs and eventually deploy similar assets — it was only a matter of time.“Russia has long had unmanned boats, essentially naval drones, capable of carrying fairly large warheads. Their use was demonstrated about a month ago during large-scale Russian naval exercises across all fleets except the Black Sea Fleet. One of these naval drones was employed there,” the expert noted. He added that questions remain over communications. Ukrainian naval drones can operate in the Black Sea thanks to a satellite-based system that allows real-time transmission of images from anywhere.“With Russia’s naval drone, the question is — what communication channel was used? It could have been a ‘gray’ Starlink, or a relay-based system. Moreover, they filmed this naval drone’s attack on the Ukrainian reconnaissance ship Simferopol using a UAV. This UAV could not only record but also relay the signal,” Katkov concluded. On August 28, Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk reported that occupying Russian forces struck the Ukrainian Navy ship Simferopol, killing one crew member.
