This view was expressed on Espreso TV by retired Ukrainian Armed Forces major, diplomat, former Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine (2016–2019), and politician Volodymyr Omelyan.“When Trump assumed office for the second time, I was very concerned about every one of his speeches because he was actually running the country, and it shook the nation and the whole world. Now, the Deep State plays a much bigger role than it did just two or three months ago. I think that despite all his extravagance in statements and affections, he will no longer be able to push through his own political line and approaches. This will still be about American interests, which are not tied solely to the president but to the interests of the country and both parties. So we may hear many unpleasant things, and we must prepare for a bad scenario, but I believe the main trend will remain: that the United States will be with Europe, perhaps not in Europe, but with Europe. All of Putin’s hopes for Trump to destroy NATO and undermine the greatness of the United States by throwing it into chaos will not come true,” he said.Volodymyr Omelyan believes that the meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump is symbolic for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, and that he will try to play on U.S.–Europe divisions.“For Putin, this meeting is certainly significant. They are pulling him out of complete isolation, and he will now try again to play on the contradictions between the United States and Europe. He may try to deliver some kind of lecture, but Trump is very irritated by Russia’s cooperation with China. And he understands that he will no longer be able to pull Russia away from China. Therefore, I think Putin’s expectations from this meeting will not come true. For us, there will obviously be problems with our expectations as well. And here, again, everything will depend on the Ukrainian Armed Forces, their level of support and supply from the government and our partners,” the diplomat added.
