Journalist Vitaliy Portnykov said this on Espreso TV."I think Putin could have offered Trump to discuss the situation on the ground. Remember, Trump simply wants to end the Russian-Ukrainian war. The borders, the way it ends – he’s absolutely not interested. Security guarantees don’t interest him either. He just wants, and realistically, for the killing to stop. He has said this repeatedly," he noted.Portnykov added that Trump’s main goal is not restoring international law."Trump, who calls Canada a U.S. state and eyes Greenland, doesn’t care about international law. He’s absolutely not interested in Ukraine’s dignity. He doesn’t see countries like Ukraine as having any dignity at all. He thinks countries like the U.S., maybe Russia, maybe China, the great powers that can destroy humanity, have dignity and must defend it. Everyone else should accept their vision of the future. Yes, Russia broke some rules, we need to make a deal with it, but why would he agree to give Ukrainians dignity when, in his view, they don’t choose between dignity and no dignity, but between life and death? And he simply gives them life from the lord’s shoulder," the journalist said.In his view, the alternative would be the disappearance of the Ukrainian people from the demographic map and their state from the political map."That’s Trump’s perspective. So, in principle, he could be interested in Putin’s idea that, after discussing certain realities on the ground, the outcome could involve territorial solutions. But again, we don’t know what that would look like. We can imagine Russian proposals and European and Ukrainian counter-proposals. For example, Ukrainians and Europeans might suggest Trump insist on a ceasefire before any negotiations, and that any territory exchange must be mutual," Portnykov added. He explained it could mean Ukraine pulling troops from some regions, while Russia pulls troops from others."And any territorial concessions from Ukraine should come with security guarantees, such as continuing Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic integration. But I believe even such a deal, if made with Trump, could play into Putin’s hands. Why? Any territorial concessions from Ukraine, with our troops leaving certain regions, could cause serious political destabilization in the country," the journalist said.Portnykov added that most of the population has been watching the TV news marathon for years, being told everything is essentially fine."We just have to endure it, and then we’ll win. And then suddenly Zelenskyy appears on TV and says he’s agreed with Trump and Putin on territorial concessions – that Ukrainian troops will leave certain territories. Can you imagine that?" he concluded. On August 8, Bloomberg and the WSJ reported that U.S. and Russian officials were discussing possible deals to end the war, which would leave Russia in control of occupied Ukrainian territory. According to the reports, under Putin’s terms, Ukraine would give Russia all of eastern Donbas and Crimea, withdrawing troops from Luhansk and Donetsk. In exchange, Russia would promise to halt its offensive in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.Later, German newspaper Bild reported that Putin still aims to seize all of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions.
