ERR reported the information. The plan concerns a forward command post responsible for operational control in NATO’s area of responsibility in the Baltic region. As Pevkur clarified, the corps will not be a full combat unit but rather a headquarters element with about 100–200 personnel, including logistics, security, and administrative infrastructure."This specific plan is now connected to one of NATO’s so-called grand plans, which covers the German-Dutch corps and their forward command post, falling within our area of responsibility. This will involve our allies performing corps-level command functions and, of course, our own service members, including conscripts. This is quite important from a defense perspective," he said.According to the Estonian defense minister, the city of Pärnu was chosen as the optimal location due to its strategic positioning — near a port, airfield, railway, highways, and proximity to Riga. Local authorities have already backed the initiative."If a decision is made to station the corps in Estonia, the best place is Pärnu. We’ve already discussed this with the city authorities," Pevkur emphasized.Former commander of the Estonian Armed Forces Martin Herem expressed the opinion that a corps managing Baltic operations should indeed be based in the region."The German-Dutch corps is essentially a headquarters or leadership element — more precisely, a forward command post. In my opinion, its deployment in Estonia or the Baltics would be very beneficial. Regardless of how much we invest in it now, the return will be much greater: the planning and execution of NATO strategy in the Baltics, including Estonia," Herem noted. The ministry has already allocated €17 million for setting up the headquarters."We’ll see how things develop. We’ve budgeted the funds, and if a decision is made, we are ready to begin implementation immediately," Pevkur concluded. On Saturday, July 26, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that according to NATO and U.S. estimates, Russia could be ready for confrontation with the West as early as 2027, and Poland may be the first target.
