TASR reported this.Fico said he would send a written draft of the Commission’s proposed guarantees to all Slovak party leaders and wait for their replies. He didn’t disclose the exact details of the Commission’s offer. The Prime Minister reminded that all EU member states must back the sanctions package unanimously. But Bratislava won’t join the vote unless it receives at least some guarantees to deal with the fallout of what Fico called a “demagogic and harmful” plan to cut Russian gas supplies starting January 1, 2028.“The obsession with Russia is so strong that we have zero chance of getting the Commission to withdraw its gas proposal. The EC will push it forward even if we vote against it a hundred times — and we will. We’ll never back this madness,” Fico said.He added that the dispute can’t be fully won — so the aim now is to avoid total loss.“If you want to live with wolves, you have to howl with them. Sadly, that’s the harsh reality of today’s Union. So we have to fight until the very end for a workable compromise,” he said.Fico said he expects party leaders to respond soon, but made it clear he still might reject the sanctions.“Sure, that would mean political circus and blackmail over EU funds, plus attempts to topple Slovakia’s elected government and install a puppet one. But even destructive fights like this can carry moral weight,” he concluded.EU member states are close to finalizing the 18th sanctions package against Russia. It’s expected to include a sharp cut in the price cap on Russian oil.Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala sent a letter to Fico, urging him not to block the sanctions. Fico replied that Slovakia needs solid guarantees before it agrees to drop Russian gas.
