Hegseth didn’t tell Trump about decision to pause arms to Ukraine – CNN
CNN reported this, citing sources.Hegseth’s decision reportedly caught the White House off guard, including the president himself, who said Tuesday he hadn’t approved the pause. During a Cabinet meeting, Trump said the U.S. would keep sending defensive weapons to Ukraine. When asked who ordered the pause, he replied: “I don’t know, why don’t you tell me?”CNN notes this is the second time this year such a move has happened. Hegseth made a similar decision in February, but it was quickly reversed. This time, the pause lasted several days, until Trump personally announced that supplies would resume. When asked whether Hegseth had alerted the White House before stopping the deliveries, press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Pentagon had reviewed the matter “to ensure all support going to all foreign nations aligns with America’s interests.”She said Trump decided to resume sending weapons to Ukraine “to help stop the killing in this brutal war.” According to the Pentagon, they’re actively working on this. Leavitt added that the president has full confidence in the Defense Department.CNN also learned that after Trump found out about the pause last week, he ordered Hegseth to restart shipments of at least some weapons — including interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems. The pause came after Trump asked Hegseth last month to review U.S. weapon stockpiles. At the time, Iran and Israel were bombing each other, and Trump wanted to make sure U.S. forces in the region had enough supplies.Still, Trump didn’t tell Hegseth to stop aid to Kyiv. That suggestion came from Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby.Colby passed his recommendation to another official, Undersecretary of Defense Steve Feinberg, who signed off on the idea — partly because of his concerns that the defense industry wasn’t replenishing U.S. stockpiles fast enough. Hegseth gave final approval.BackgroundOn July 2, reports said the U.S. had paused some deliveries of anti-aircraft missiles and precision-guided bombs to Ukraine over concerns about its own military stockpiles. The next day, it was reported that the Pentagon was still giving Trump advice on aid to Ukraine.Later, media said Hegseth had made the call to halt some weapon shipments on his own, even though internal reviews found the aid wouldn’t harm U.S. readiness. On July 8, Trump said the U.S. would keep sending weapons to Ukraine. The Pentagon confirmed more military aid was on the way.
