SBU reported the information.According to the SBU, one of the suspects is a 24-year-old former student of a Kyiv technical university who remained in Ukraine after being expelled in 2023 for poor academic performance. His father, who lives in China but regularly visited Ukraine, personally supervised his son's espionage activities.Investigators say the former student attempted to obtain technical documentation related to the production of RK-360MC Neptune missiles. To do so, he tried to recruit a Ukrainian citizen involved in the development of advanced weaponry for the Ukrainian Defense Forces. The SBU's counterintelligence unit detained the alleged Chinese spy at the early stage of his activity — catching him red-handed as he attempted to obtain classified documents.Based on the evidence collected, SBU investigators formally charged the suspects under Part 1, Article 114 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code (espionage). If convicted, they face up to 15 years in prison and confiscation of property. The Neptune missile is a cutting-edge Ukrainian weapon designed to strike all types of warships and amphibious vessels. It gained global attention in 2022 when it destroyed the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s flagship, the Moskva missile cruiser.Note: Under Article 62 of Ukraine’s Constitution, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court ruling.Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has enacted a National Security and Defense Council decision imposing sanctions on several Chinese companies whose components were found in Russian drones.
