In the past few days, various media outlets, politicians at different levels, and experts have been actively discussing the idea of recognizing Crimea as Russian.
So, whats really going on All the current peace talk ideas from the U.S.
basically come down to the Kellogg Plan freeze the front line as the border, Ukraine doesnt join NATO, and in return, some of the sanctions on Russia are rolled back.
The main sticking point is the status of the occupied territories.
Thats where Witkoffs comments about the possible recognition of Crimea come in.
The Paris meeting had to happen because without the Europeans, lifting sanctions just isnt on the table.
Plus, the U.S.
cant even theoretically recognize annexed territories on its own without Europe.
What were seeing now mostly boils down to finding some kind of formula for quasirecognition for example, Ukraine agreeing not to take the territories back by force.
Whether thats enough for Putin is doubtful.
But hell clearly try to drag things out.
Its also important to watch the EUU.S.
negotiations or more accurately, the EUU.S.Ukraine triangle.
Right now, it would be weird for the EU to give anything away without tying it to their own concerns tariffs, NATOs security umbrella, and how the war ends.
So the idea that the EU might just cave is farfetched.
In this context, its worth watching Russias moves.
Theyre suddenly acting like theyre open to letting foreign companies back in, and Putin even told the government to draw up rules for their return.
The message here seems to be even if talks fail, Russia wants to show its open for Western especially American business.
Its a signal that theyre leaving the door open for economic cooperation with the U.S.
even during the summer counteroffensive.
To repeat theres a chance this negotiation round could end with some kind of deal but its a long shot.
We wont have to wait long to find out.
