Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has congratulated Ukrainians on Unity Day, highlighting that in 2022, they chose not the path of division and discord but the path of unity and struggle to defend their country.
Source Zelenskyy, addressing the nation from Sophia Square in Kyiv, where the Unification Act was proclaimed Quote Our nation is strong and independent because it stands united and indivisible.
We hold this truth close every day, but especially on 22 January, Ukraines Unity Day.
I am recording this address from Sophia Square a historic and powerful place.
It carries the wisdom of events that unfolded here more than a century ago and the lessons of our history that followed.
These moments remind us when we stand together and fight, we achieve what is rightfully ours, but when we are divided, we risk losing it.
Details Zelenskyy recalled that it was on this very square that the Unification Act was proclaimed, bringing together Rightbank and Leftbank Ukraine into a single state.
Quote But ambition, division, and enemies both external and internal who exploited them prevented independent Ukraine from enduring.
For generations, our people lived under foreign flags and traditions, told how to live, speak, think, whom to love, and whom to hate.
This is what it means to lose statehood, to lose independence.
The president added that on 24 February 2022, Ukrainians were tasked with proving just how vital it is to preserve unity and stand together shoulder to shoulder.
Quote 24 February became a challenge, a test of our unity, maturity, and faith in Ukraine.
And we united driven by an inner calling.
Together, we stood strong.
In the word together lies the strength of Ukrainians.
It reflects what we are capable of when we choose not our own ambitions, but Ukraine.
When we choose not discord, but the sword to defend what is ours, protect our people, and fight with all our might.
He recalled the beginning of Russias fullscale invasion when there werent enough weapons for all the volunteers, but there was more than enough courage, dedication, and faith in ourselves and in Ukraine.
Quote This is what unity means.
This is the togetherness we need in order to take what is ours the right to live in peace, the president said.
Zelenskyy expressed confidence that future generations of Ukrainians would continue to gather at Sophia Square for every celebration, under the blue and yellow flag, in our free country.
And we will do everything to ensure this.
So that we are never ashamed before them, so they know we didnt repeat the mistakes of the past.
Ukraine exists.
Ukraine is united.
Peaceful.
Indivisible, the president said.
