Reports have emerged that the Russians may have killed Oscar Jenkins, an Australian citizen who fought for Ukraine and was taken prisoner by the Russians.
Australia promises to take the strongest action possible if this information is confirmed.
Sources CNN with reference to a press conference by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Quote We have called in the Russian ambassador already.
We will await the facts to come out.
But if there has been any harm caused to Oscar Jenkins, that is absolutely reprehensible.
And the Australian government will take the strongest action possible.
Details CNN noted that the Russians captured Jenkins in December 2024.
Later, a video of him being interrogated was released online, but CNN was unable to establish the location.
The footage shows that Jenkins hands are tightly tied, and he seems to have difficulty understanding the questions asked in Russian.
This week, the Australian television channel ABC and CNN affiliate Seven News reported that Jenkins had presumably been killed in captivity.
The channels cited sources in Ukraine but did not disclose their names.
Despite the Australian prime ministers strong reaction, he did not disclose any details about the measures that Canberra might take against Moscow.
Background In the summer of 2022, the International Legion, which includes volunteer soldiers from other countries fighting for Ukraine, reported the deaths of citizens of Australia, France, Germany and the Netherlands.
