The Basmanny Court in Moscow has sentenced in absentia Borys Dnipro Mayor Filatov to nine years in prison, accusing him of "spreading fake news" about the Russian army and "inciting hatred".

Details:Russia’s Investigative Committee said the "incitement of hatred" case centres on a "post calling for the killing of Russians" that Filatov allegedly shared on Facebook and Telegram in April 2022. This appears to refer to a now-deleted post from 3 April 2022, which had been criticised by pro-Kremlin bloggers.

In early April 2022, Ukrainian forces regained control of Bucha in Kyiv Oblast, and journalists began publishing images and videos documenting the atrocities committed by Russian forces.

Quote:"I see how hatred is consuming us all after what these savages did in Kyiv Oblast... The time has come for cold fury. We now have the full moral right to calmly, with completely clear minds, kill these monsters wherever they may be in the world," Filatov wrote at the time.

Background:

• In December 2023, the Russian "court" issued a second decision on the absentee arrest of Kyrylo Budanov, the Ukrainian Defence Intelligence chief.
