Russia reduces number of drone attacks for first time in almost a year, UK intelligence reports

UK intelligence has analysed Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian territory in December 2024 and noted certain changes.

Source : UK Defence Intelligence's update on the Russo-Ukrainian war on 13 January, as reported by European Pravda

Details : UK intelligence noted that in December 2024, Russia launched approximately 1,700 attack drones of various types against Ukraine.

The update says that this is less than in November 2024 when 2,300 drones were launched. This is the first time since March to April 2024 that the number of drones has decreased.

The intelligence agency said it was likely that weather factors had affected operations at the beginning of the month, as can be seen in several nights with waves of more than 100 drones which followed periods of particularly low or no activity.

Ukraine's Air Force reported that 53% of Russian drones were shot down, while the rest were suppressed by electronic warfare or had already diverted without posing a significant threat, it added.

Quote : "Various factors can impact the monthly launch rates positively or negatively, however it remains likely that Russia can sustain numbers in excess of at least 1,500 per month."

Background :

  • On the night of 12-13 January alone, Russia launched 110 attack drones, 78 of which were shot down by air defence, with damage caused by falling debris, and 31 drones failed to reach their targets and disappeared from radar.
  • In October, UK intelligence wrote that Russia launched about 2,000 attack drones on Ukrainian regions during the month, which is about 700 more than in September.
  • After that, UK intelligence wrote that on 28 November, Russia reached a new high of 2,030 casualties in one day. It was the first time that Russia's casualty rate had exceeded 2,000 in a day.
