Diplomat Roman Bezsmertnyi spoke about this on Espreso TV."Why is Moscow now demanding that Ukraine hold elections, amend the Constitution, and hold a referendum? Russia is seeking to delegitimize Ukrainian authorities, which would also mean delegitimizing the Ukrainian state and the collapse of the constitutional order. This has been clear from the very beginning, and I have spoken about it repeatedly. Currently, the president, parliament, and all authorities in Ukraine operate within the framework of Ukraine's Constitution and laws. Holding elections could raise questions about the delegitimization and illegitimacy of Ukraine's government," Bezsmertnyi explained. The diplomat emphasized that Ukraine's leadership must be extremely cautious regarding elections and must not allow changes to Ukraine's Constitution."Because, for example, holding elections in temporarily occupied territories will raise questions, and organizing and conducting elections for Ukrainian citizens abroad will also raise questions. I'm not even mentioning internally displaced persons, etc. All of this will require special decisions. The non-participation of such a large number of voters in the electoral process could be interpreted as the elections being illegitimate. Therefore, maximum caution is needed on this issue," he added. On December 9, in an interview with POLITICO, Donald Trump stated that "the time has come" for Ukraine to hold presidential elections. In response, Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed Ukraine's readiness to hold elections within 60-90 days if the U.S. and European partners guarantee security.Later, Verkhovna Rada Deputy Speaker Oleksandr Korniienko stated that the issue of holding elections during wartime requires a comprehensive approach and cannot be considered without creating proper security conditions.Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that in the near future, members of the Verkhovna Rada should develop options for holding presidential elections in Ukraine.
