The IAEA report, published on December 5, states that the comprehensive safety assessment of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) at the Chornobyl plant was completed only in early December. The drone attack on this structure occurred on February 14."The mission confirmed that the [protective structure] had lost its primary safety functions, including the confinement capability, but also found that there was no permanent damage to its load-bearing structures or monitoring systems," the document states.IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi emphasizes that the Chornobyl structure requires additional repairs."Limited temporary repairs have been carried out on the roof, but timely and comprehensive restoration remains essential to prevent further degradation and ensure long-term nuclear safety," he said.Based on the mission's findings, the IAEA recommends further work to restore and protect the confinement structure, including measures for humidity control and an updated corrosion monitoring program, as well as modernization of the integrated automated monitoring system for the shelter structure built atop the reactor immediately after the accident.Additional temporary repairs will be conducted at the Chornobyl plant in 2026 to restore the shelter function, the IAEA reported. The agency's specialist visit to Ukraine, taking place December 1-12, will focus on more than ten substations—critical nodes in the electrical grid connected to nuclear power plants.
