Denmark plans to allocate DKK 9.4 billion (€1.26 billion) for military assistance to Ukraine in 2026, compared with DKK 16.5 billion (€2.21 billion) in 2025 and almost DKK 19 billion (€2.54 billion) in 2024.

Details: Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen confirmed the planned reduction in a response to an inquiry from Denmark's Defence Committee.

DR cites data from the Kiel Institute showing that Denmark has provided more support to Ukraine relative to its GDP than any other nation.

Therefore, Simon Kollerup, a member of the Defence Committee, believes that "it is natural that we are seeing a stabilisation of the level of support being provided".

Quote from Kollerup: "We decided to be one of the countries that took the lead at the beginning of the war by providing large-scale support. I also think it is fair to say that this support somewhat exceeds what is actually dictated by the size of our country. Therefore, I find it quite natural that the support is decreasing."

Details: Meanwhile, another member of the Defence Committee, Stinus Lindgreen, who requested the report, believes that now is not the time to reduce support for Ukraine.

"I think we should return to the level we were at in previous years… If you look at the situation in Ukraine now, it is critical. Now is not the time to reduce our ambitions. Neither in Denmark nor internationally," he said.

Kollerup, however, is convinced that other countries should step forward in terms of the scale of assistance for Ukraine.

Quote from Kollerup: "We are a small country with a healthy economy and a high ability to make decisions, so we were actually able to find the funds in our economy to provide large-scale support at the beginning. But I also believe there is room for other countries to take the lead."
