Details : The German Air Force said on Thursday 4 December that several Eurofighter jets had taken off from the Nörvenich airbase and were headed for the Polish military airbase in Malbork. Germany had announced this step back in mid-October.
Along with the aircraft, the Bundeswehr is sending around 150 service members, including not only pilots but also technical specialists, logisticians, security personnel and military police.
The deployment of the aircraft, which is initially set to last until the end of March 2026, is a response to recent violations of NATO airspace by Russian fighter jets and drones.
Lieutenant General Holger Neumann of the German Air Force said that, with this mission, their service personnel – together with the quick reaction squadron already stationed in Romania since August – were making another valuable contribution to protecting the eastern part of the Alliance's territory.
Background :
- In August and September, German Eurofighters had already been deployed at the Malbork military airbase in Poland.
- The Netherlands, meanwhile, took over the protection of a major NATO logistics hub in the city of Rzeszów in eastern Poland on 1 December, deploying 300 troops and several air defence systems.
