Quote: "The Australian Government has announced a AUD 95 million (US$63 million) military assistance package for Ukraine. This includes a AUD 50 million contribution to PURL, AUD 2 million for the Drone Coalition, and AUD 43 million in military equipment, including tactical air-defence radars, munitions, and combat engineering assets."
Details: In addition, the New Zealand government has allocated NZD 15 million (around US$8.7 million) to support the PURL initiative, which supplies weapons and equipment to Ukrainian forces.
Background:
- NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced an increase in support for Ukraine. He said that the Alliance was aware that relevant decisions were being prepared in "one or two" countries and expressed confidence in a positive outcome.
- Rutte believes this should send a clear signal to Russian leader Vladimir Putin that the allies "are not going anywhere" and will continue to provide Ukraine with everything it needs for its defence.
- Rutte also recently stated that if peace talks are unsuccessful, pressure must be exerted on Russia through continued military assistance for Ukraine and through the introduction of anti-Russian sanctions.
