Turkish foreign minister: Agreement between Ukraine and Russia could ensure peace in region for 50-70 years

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that a potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia could ensure peace in the region for the next 50-70 years.

Details: Speaking about the Russo-Ukrainian war, Fidan said that compared with the past, both sides are now more ready for peace, as they have seen the scale of human suffering and destruction.
"Under certain conditions Putin is ready to accept a ceasefire and a comprehensive peace agreement under certain conditions. This has been conveyed to the Ukrainians, and we are involved in some aspects of this process. This war is also costing Russia dearly," the minister said.
He emphasised that a potential peace agreement should include clear commitments by both sides not to attack each other "under any circumstances".
"If an agreement can be reached on this issue, peace in the region could be ensured for 50, 60, 70 years. Perhaps even longer," Fidan added.
At the same time, he said that a peace agreement does not mean abandoning one's own security measures.
"Neither the Europeans nor the Russians will do that; on the contrary, they will continue preparing for different scenarios. NATO will also do so. Time will tell how sustainable peace will prove to be. However, Russia is also suffering economic and social losses and will benefit from an agreement," Fidan said.
Background:
- It was earlier reported that Qatar and Türkiye had participated in developing a new US "peace plan" to end the war in Ukraine and are supporting US mediation efforts.
- Russian leader Vladimir Putin told Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that he sees the first draft of the US "peace plan", prepared jointly with Donald Trump's administration, as a possible basis for a "final peace settlement".
