Trump sends envoy Witkoff to Putin to agree "peace plan" on Ukraine

US President Donald Trump said on 25 November that he has instructed special envoy Steven Witkoff to meet Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Moscow to finalise the "peace plan".

Details: Trump said that the original 28-point "peace plan" "has been fine-tuned, with additional input from both sides, and there are only a few remaining points of disagreement".
Quote: "In the hopes of finalising this Peace Plan, I have directed my Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to meet with President Putin in Moscow and, at the same time, Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll will be meeting with the Ukrainians." [N.B. Ukrainska Pravda does not recognise Putin as president – ed.].
More details: Trump added that Witkoff and Driscoll will brief senior White House officials on the outcome after these talks.
Background:
- The United States and Ukraine developed a new 19-point peace agreement during the Geneva talks but left the most politically sensitive issues for the two presidents to decide.
- White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on 25 November that the United States has made "tremendous progress" towards reaching a "peace deal" between Ukraine and Russia, but "there are a few delicate, but not insurmountable, details that must be sorted out".
