Details: Macron said that the Coalition of the Willing will in the next few days focus on frozen Russian assets and on preparing security guarantees for Ukraine.
Macron said that the coalition decided to move forward in particular on two things in the coming days. The first is frozen Russian assets, which he said are extremely important and also a means of pressure against Russia.
Macron said that members of the Coalition of the Willing, "in coordination with all the European countries most concerned and, of course, with the European Union and the European Commission, [will find] a solution that will secure funding… and maintain this pressure".
The second thing is security guarantees. The president says that the Coalition of the Willing has done a lot of very good work in recent months under the leadership of the British and the French, but they still need to make sure that this ceasefire will last.
Macron said that the first element of security guarantees must be monitoring compliance with the ceasefire through observation, which is why they want to begin this work, in particular with the United States and NATO.
Background:
- It was reported earlier that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has given an optimistic assessment of the latest efforts to reach a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia during a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing on 25 November.
- The United States and Ukraine developed a new 19-point peace agreement during the Geneva talks but left the most politically sensitive issues for the two presidents to decide.
- White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on 25 November that the United States has made "tremendous progress" towards reaching a "peace deal" between Ukraine and Russia, but "there are a few delicate, but not insurmountable, details that must be sorted out".
