Details: Opening a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing on Tuesday, Macron said that "there is finally an opportunity to make real progress towards genuine peace" between Ukraine and Russia.
"But an absolute condition for lasting peace is a set of very reliable security guarantees, not just guarantees on paper," he added.
The president also said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio would join the Coalition of the Willing meeting.
Background:
- The United States and Ukraine developed a new 19-point peace agreement during the Geneva talks but left the most politically sensitive issues for the two presidents to decide.
- White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the United States has made "tremendous progress" towards reaching a "peace deal" between Ukraine and Russia, but "there are a few delicate, but not insurmountable, details that must be sorted out".
