German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that any plan to end the Russo-Ukrainian war requires a genuine willingness from the Kremlin to engage in negotiations.
Source: Merz on X (Twitter), as reported by European Pravda
Details: Merz said that it is impossible to end the Russo-Ukrainian war "overnight".
Quote: "The joint peace plan is meant to launch a process. For that to happen, Russia must come to the negotiating table now. As long as there is no visible willingness to do so, there will be no process and no peace."
Background:
- On 21 November, Axios published the list of points in the US "peace plan" presented to Ukraine, drafted without Europe's involvement and requiring numerous concessions by Ukraine to Russia.
- Over the weekend, European leaders proposed their own amendments. Talks between US and Ukrainian delegations were held in Geneva, after which the draft was significantly revised in Ukraine's favour.
- The Kremlin has claimed it has not received "any peace plan" following the Geneva talks and criticised the amendments proposed by European leaders.
