Breaking Defense reported the information.Swedish Air Force Commander Jonas Wikman declared that NATO is in danger of losing the “next decisive conflict in Europe” unless the alliance fundamentally overhauls the speed at which it develops and adapts new weapon systems.“If we can’t develop in a faster pace, if we cannot innovate and learn under pressure like Ukraine does, we may lose a future war with Russia," Wikman stated during the Defence IQ International Fighter conference.Wikman described the Ukrainian resistance as a “masterclass in accelerated adaptation,” arguing that the conflict is a clear sign that the “side that learns fastest wins.”He pointed to the extraordinary pace of technological change on the battlefield, adding, “tactics evolve weekly. Almost no weapon … that we once supported Ukraine with, is today used in the same way as it was intended to be used.”The commander's remarks echo growing calls from other high-ranking Nordic leaders for defense industries to urgently provide new technologies tested in Ukraine, rather than focusing on traditional equipment programs with development cycles that span years. To achieve what he called “readiness for future threats,” Wikman urged closer collaboration between military forces, industry, and academia.“I’m not talking about partnership[s] for peacetime. … I’m talking about a capability for wartime operations,” he emphasized. As a practical example, Wikman explained that the Swedish Air Force is integrating this model with its new S 106 GlobalEye surveillance aircraft. This involves creating a “development cell” that co-locates industry and academic experts directly within the Air Force’s operational unit.“Industry and academia must be integrated into our wartime organization, co-located, empowered and accountable under the commander’s intent,” he said.
