German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has called for tougher measures against Russia ahead of the Steel Summit at the Chancellery on 6 November.

Details: Klingbeil believes there must be "a complete end to all steel imports from Russia" as soon as possible.
"Steel slabs produced in Russia and processed in the EU are still exempt from sanctions," he criticised.
Steel slabs are raw materials used to produce sheets and strips.
"You cannot explain to any worker in our steel industry that Europe is still keeping the market open for Putin," Klingbeil stated.
Background:
- On 23 October, the EU also formally adopted its 19th package of sanctions against Russia by written procedure.
- The measures include a ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas that will enter into force six months after adoption for short-term contracts and from 1 January 2027 for long-term contracts.
- The package also imposes sanctions against another 117 tankers in the shadow fleet, bringing the total number of sanctioned vessels to 558.
- The next (20th) EU sanctions package against Russia is expected to include additional tariffs on goods from Russia and Belarus as well as restrictions targeting Russia's energy sector and financial institutions.
