Details: In a statement published on 31 October, the ministry said the latest EU sanctions package, like all earlier ones, is illegitimate. It said that in response to what it called "unfriendly steps", Russia has expanded the list of representatives of EU institutions, EU member states and several other European countries who are now banned from entering Russia.
Those targeted include staff of security agencies, state and commercial bodies, and citizens of EU member states and other Western countries who are responsible for military support to Ukraine.
Background:
- On 23 October, the EU also formally adopted its 19th package of sanctions against Russia by written procedure.
- The measures include a ban on imports of Russian liquefied natural gas that will enter into force six months after adoption for short-term contracts and from 1 January 2027 for long-term contracts.
- The package also imposes sanctions against another 117 tankers in the shadow fleet, bringing the total number of sanctioned vessels to 558.
- The next, 20th, EU sanctions package against Russia is expected to include additional tariffs on goods from Russia and Belarus as well as restrictions targeting Russia's energy sector and financial institutions.
