Vasyl Maliuk, the head of Ukraine's Security Service, announced this, Unian reports. He said that a joint intelligence operation resulted in the "one hundred percent" destruction of one of Russia's three initial Oreshnik missiles. The highly successful, and previously undisclosed, mission took place at the Kapustin Yar test range in Russia."This was a very successful operation that was not advertised at the time," Maliuk stated during a press conference. "It was reported exclusively to the President of Ukraine, and only a few presidents of other countries were aware." He noted the strike occurred "the summer before last," before the Oreshnik name was widely known and before Moscow began leveraging it as a public threat.According to Ukrainian intelligence, Russia initially possessed three of these advanced missiles. After deploying one in a strike and losing another to the Ukrainian operation, Moscow is believed to have at least one remaining. Officials estimate Russia plans to produce up to six of the missiles annually. The revelation was accompanied by a stark warning from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who said that Russia intends to station its remaining Oreshnik missiles in Belarus. This move would place Eastern Europe directly under threat, given the weapon's capabilities."We understand their approximate range is 5,500 kilometers," the president explained, urging Western partners to recognize the danger. "Europeans, especially in Eastern Europe, should pay attention to this. Everyone needs to pay attention to these risks."BackgroundRussian leader Vladimir Putin first mentioned the Oreshnik missile system in 2024. At that time, he claimed that on November 21, 2024, Russia had tested a medium-range ballistic missile during an attack on Ukraine's Dnipro. The Security Service of Ukraine later presented unique evidence of yet another act of Russian aggression, showing international media the fragments of the so-called Oreshnik missile.Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko later announced his readiness to deploy up to ten Oreshnik missile systems on Belarusian territory. During the Zapad 2025 military exercises in September 2025, Belarusian and Russian forces conducted training using these missile systems, along with drones and the latest combat tactics.
