Diplomat Kostiantyn Yelisieiev stated this on Espreso TV."I would like to say that Trump acted quite correctly in refusing to hold the meeting in Budapest. Of course, he had in mind, let's be frank, his failed meeting in Anchorage with Putin," he said.According to the diplomat, Trump could not afford another such failed meeting with Putin."That is why he decided to take a decisive step, and as of today, some say he canceled the Budapest meeting, others say it has been postponed, but under any circumstances, if an agreement is not reached for Russia to take the first step—meaning a comprehensive, complete, and unconditional ceasefire—then without this step, Trump will not go to a meeting with Putin, whether it's in Budapest, another capital, or Turkey," Yelisieiev believes. He added that Trump decided to raise the stakes."He decided to see how his meeting with Chinese President Xi would conclude. In my opinion, Trump's future tactics regarding the summit with Putin will depend on the outcome of the meeting with Xi. On the other hand, we all must understand that the statement referenced in the context of Lavrov shows Russia is trying to stall for time. And let's be frank, as of today, Russia is not yet interested in any normal, constructive negotiations. It is trying to use diplomatic consultations as an element to continue its aggression against Ukraine," the diplomat noted.According to Yelisieiev, Trump understood this very well."Here, one more nuance should be noted—the excellent, brilliant work of Rubio, who, thanks to his principled position, seems to me to have quite rightly recommended that Trump take a tougher, I would say, hawkish stance towards the Russian aggressor. So, we will continue to follow the development of the situation," he concluded. On October 16, Donald Trump had a phone conversation with Vladimir Putin and announced that he had agreed to a meeting with him in Budapest. On October 23, the American president announced that he had canceled the planned summit and expressed hope that the Russian dictator and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would become more prudent.Later, the U.S. leader noted that he is ready to hold a meeting with Putin on the condition that he is confident in the possibility of concluding an agreement to end the war in Ukraine. On October 27, an aide to the Russian dictator, Yuri Ushakov, stated that the readiness to hold a meeting between Putin and Trump supposedly remains.
